How to Interview a Real Estate Agent in 3-Steps(Even if your Friend is Licensed)…

Now that you’ve made the decision to sell your home, it’s time to start interviewing Realtors. I’m sure a family friend is licensed or your cousin just got licensed and now you’re asking yourself who should you hire? This can be a very personal decision with a lot of emotion behind it because you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings but let’s be honest, you want the most money possible. So how do you choose? This can be made easy by setting up interviews with potential agents. Sellers need to remember, that whether or not they’re thinking this way, they are the new boss and employer of the agent selling their home. Treat it as such by following these three keys steps.

    1. Choose 3-5 agents and set aside a few days for interviews.
    2. Pay close attention to the agent’s focus on what you’re saying to them. The only thing this agent should be doing during this first meeting is learning about who you are and what your motivation is for moving. If they primarily talk about themselves and less about learning why you want to sell, you can count on poor communication and not taking responsibility throughout the transaction.
    3. The agent needs to be transparent and definitive with their strategy for getting your home sold. This includes coming prepared with their marketing plan, a comparable market analysis, vendors, past results, social presence, and an introduction of the members on their team helping throughout the sale.

When you choose an agent, you are choosing their experience, resources, network, and their marketing strategy. As much as you don’t want to hurt cousin Jimmy’s feelings, you also want to protect your investment because that is exactly what real estate is, an investment. Here’s what a listing presentation will look like, so you can have an idea of what to look for when interviewing agents.
